This album was put together by the CEO of Universal Music South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, Sipho Dlamini.
“It was important for Def Jam Africa to be involved because the first film was so legendary to Africans in the diaspora,” Dlamini said.
“The film franchise is tongue-in-cheek but conveys a rich quality of life in Africa. That is reflected in the music on Rhythms of Zamunda. We wanted to represent some of the sounds that are relevant, impactful, and current on the continent” He continued.
In another interview, Sipho Dlamini mentioned that “This is a revenue generated for the artists because with the global attention that the movie Coming 2 America will have, this music will now be consumed at a global level”
The original Coming to America movie soundtrack captivated fans in the 19s. Music from the Cover Girls, Chico DeBarge, Mel and Kim, Sister Sledge, and a host of others gave the soundtrack a top fanbase. Also, it had a Billboard Hot 100 hit. The producers hope to maintain the same energy with the soundtrack for the second part of the movie.
In a Press release for the movie, it narrates the movie as thus “Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens, New York – where it all began.”
Returning actors from the first cast of Coming to America include King Jaffe Joffer (James Earl Jones), Queen Lisa (Shari Headley), Cleo McDowell (John Amos), Maurice (Louie Anderson), and the motley barbershop crew.
